Cathy Daley, senior lecturer in Conservation of Historic Objects, attended the 2-week summer school in ‘Communication and Teaching Skills in Conservation and Science’ run by the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome, July 2017.
The course explored innovative and effective methodologies of learning and teaching for the core concepts of conservation and science and Cathy used this experience to enhance the teaching at Lincoln. These concepts were subsequently disseminated amongst colleagues and students at Lincoln through an internal CPD workshop delivered on 14th September 2017 for staff and students. The workshop covered forming groups, modalities of learning and teaching communication, research methods and topics specific to the conservation discipline.
The content of the course has also now been incorporated into modules on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Conservation of Historic Objects in the School of History & Heritage.
Cathy and the other summer school participants are now able to continue exchanging ideas on teaching and learning methods through an online learning platform established by ICCROM. Another key outcome of this event was the excellent networking opportunities: possible Erasmus partners were identified and through one contact made in Rome, Cathy was invited to take part in an expert meeting in October 2017 to review UNSECO policy.
