Panopto Roll-Out (Academic Year 2017/2018)

Start Date: December 2016    Proposed End Date: May 2018
❱ Status: Closed

Following the Panopto pilot, a roll-out of Panopto in 70+ teaching spaces will be underway. Panopto enables staff to engage in a range of activities not previously possible with institutionally-provided technologies. These include:

  1. Recording live teaching sessions

Panopto provides an automated lecture recording solution in nine teaching spaces via the Panopto Remote Recorder which captures video, audio and screen activity. Via the Panopto Desktop Recorder staff in another 70 teaching spaces can capture their screen and audio (but not video). All recordings go directly to the VLE.

  1. Recording micro lectures for flipped and blended learning

All staff can install the Panopto Desktop Recorder from Software Centre onto their on-campus PC and use this to record short lectures comprising of screen capture, audio and video.  Staff can also install the Panopto recorder on non-university machines via the Panopto website.

  1. Powerful media server for storing videos

The Panopto media server provides staff a private space for hosting T&L videos. Uploads are quick and privacy settings allow for a range of activities to be supported (e.g. videos of student presentations only for external examiners).

  1. Mobile video capture

Staff and students can use the Panopto app for iOS to capture in-the-field video footage from the classroom and beyond. The video upload integrates with Blackboard.

The pilot of Panopto went live initially in November 2016. The second phase of the project started in September 2017.
