Creative Writing students at the University of Lincoln work hard every day to develop their craft as writers and critical readers. One of the challenges for any Creative Writing programme, however, is how to offer students the opportunity to gain work experience within a professional publishing environment. In order to overcome this challenge, lecturer Daniele Pantano has founded The Lincoln Review, an international literary journal (edited exclusively by students) that publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, book reviews, art and photography.
The Lincoln Review (TLR) is a unique feature of the Creative Writing undergraduate programme, as it is an international literary journal – not simply another campus journal (in fact, no one associated with the University is allowed to submit work). As a result, our students gain invaluable skills in terms of the editorial, design, production and publication processes; work with industry standard software (Submittable, for example); as well as enjoying the chance to correspond and network with new and established writers and artists from around the globe. As such, TLR prepares our students for successful careers as both writers and potential editors, publishers, literary agents, and members of the creative and cultural industries. Furthermore, it highlights the BA (Hons) Creative Writing programme at the University of Lincoln as a centre of excellence and innovative pedagogies.
Over forty undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the School of English & Journalism and the School of Film & Media are signed up to serve as editors. Students were required to submit formal applications for all editorial positions, including the positions of Managing Editors and Senior Fiction, Poetry, and Nonfiction Editors.
The inaugural issue of The Lincoln Review will be published in March 2020 and all issues will be archived by the British Library (ISSN: 2632-4423).
